Growing up, my dad told us stories of his time as a young teen and young adult in the backcountry, leading trips with the Sierra Club, or heading out with friends for fun. He’d tell us about the time he missed Bob Dylan on a trip by just two days. About the time a much older and hairier trip leader tore out hair on his chest and stuck it to my dad’s with a “here, have some.” About the time he felt the snow bank crumble beneath him, followed by a terrifying free fall, several broken bones and a medi-flight to the hospital where he stayed for weeks. I can vividly picture him tracing out routes with his pinky nail on the aged and wrinkled topography maps at our cabin, as he recalled the memories of these trails, the people with him, and the wonders of nature that lay within.
